DealerThe person who deals cards and calculates the pot
Button (BTN)Also known as the "button dealer". The strongest position as you get to act last after the pre-flop
Small Blind (SB)Pays half of the mandatory participation fee (BB) and must act first after the pre-flop, making it a disadvantageous position
Big Blind (BB)The position that must pay a mandatory participation fee
Under the Gun (UTG)The position that acts first in the pre-flop
Hijack (HJ)The position to the left of UTG
Cut Off (CO)The second-strongest position after BTN
Early Position (EP)The position that acts first in the pre-flop
Late Position (LP)The position that acts in the latter half of each round
In PositionThe position that acts after other players
Out of PositionThe position that acts before other players

BetPutting chips in when no one else has yet
CheckPassing the turn without adding chips
CallPutting in the same amount of chips as the previous player
RaisePutting in a larger amount of chips than the previous player
ReraiseAdding to the raise amount of the previous player
Check RaiseRaising after checking, in response to another player's bet
Minimum RaiseMaking the smallest possible raise
Donk BetA non-aggressor betting before the aggressor's action
Three BetRaising against a bet that has already been raised
Four BetRaising against a three bet
All-InPutting in all your chips

Betting Rounds

Round NameDescription
Pre-FlopThe stage where cards are dealt and community cards are not yet visible
FlopThe stage where three community cards are open
TurnThe stage where the fourth community card is open
RiverThe stage where the fifth community card is open

Other Basic Important Terms

NameDescription
BlindA mandatory fee that must be paid before the cards are dealt. The amount of the blind sets the rate for the table.
Buy-InPreparing the necessary chips to join the game.
PotThe chips that are gathered in the middle of the table.
Community CardThe cards that are shared among players.
DrawThe situation where you need to draw specific cards to complete your hand.
FishA term for an inexperienced or poor player.
Heads UpPlaying one-on-one.
KickerThe card in a hand that is not part of a pair.
Limp InJoining the game by paying an amount equal to the Big Blind (BB).
MuckFolding without showing your hand.
OddsThe probability of drawing the necessary card to complete your hand.
OutsThe cards that will complete your hand.
Pocket PairHaving a pair in the two cards that are dealt to you initially.
RagA card that doesn't affect the outcome of a hand.
ShowdownRevealing each player's hand to see who wins.
HandRefers to either the two cards a player holds or the combination of those cards with the community board to make a five-card hand.


It's important to at least know these terms, so make sure to remember them.
